We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Biologist to lead shorebird and seabird conservation efforts in the Eastern Florida Panhandle. Position Overview:
The Biologist will oversee the monitoring, protection, and conservation of shorebirds and seabirds during both breeding and non-breeding seasons. Working remotely in the Apalachicola region, this role includes fieldwork on barrier islands such as Little St. George Island, Dog Island, and other critical wildlife areas. The ideal candidate will possess advanced bird identification skills, boat-handling expertise, and a passion for conservation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor nesting birds and conduct seasonal shorebird and seabird counts.
• Conduct banded bird resighting surveys and biweekly winter coastal bird surveys.
• Post and maintain symbolic fencing during nesting season; remove as required.
• Manage and interpret data for technical reports, grant requirements, and presentations.
• Make predation management recommendations and minimize bird disturbances.
• Operate and maintain field equipment, including boats, vehicles, and trailers.
• Train and manage volunteers in bird stewardship and monitoring activities.
• Lead outreach and educational initiatives, including presentations and community events.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and partner organizations to foster conservation efforts.
• Adhere to Audubon’s equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles in all work.

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife ecology, or related field required.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in bird identification and demographic bird surveys; at least 2 years focusing on shorebirds or seabirds.
• Expertise in operating boats in nearshore marine conditions and trailer launching.
• Advanced skills in data collection, entry, and analysis using tools like Microsoft Excel and Access.
• Strong organizational and analytical abilities with excellent problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently in dynamic and challenging field conditions.
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Commitment to Audubon’s values of care, collaboration, integrity, and impact.

 

Preferred Skills:

• Experience kayaking in nearshore or open-water environments.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholder groups.
• Previous experience in volunteer training and supervision.

 

 

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Willingness to work long hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.

 

Work Environment:

• Remote-based in the Apalachicola region, with regular travel to field sites.
• Extensive fieldwork conducted on barrier islands and beaches.
