Description

DEFINITION: Under supervision to control and extinguish fires; respond to traffic accidents, natural and manmade disasters, hazardous material releases; administer first-aid treatment to and transport sick or injured persons to medical facility; working as a member of emergency medical/firefighting team; protect life and property.

Responds to fire alarms on an “on call” basis; connects and lays hose lines; assists in holding nozzles to direct stream of water on fire; operates engine pumping equipment in training capacity; raises, lowers and climbs ladders; assists in conducting salvage and clean-up operations; assists in the cleaning, maintenance and testing of fire equipment and apparatus; assists in station coverage when on duty personnel are out of the station on fire or mutual aid calls for extended periods of time; responds on mutual aid strike team assignments for a period of up to 14 days;

Typical Qualifications
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Must live within two miles of the Dinuba city limits.

Knowledge of: Technical firefighting principles and techniques; Geography of local area; First-aid equipment and supplies; Emergency communication equipment; Emergency medical treatment.

Ability to: Read and understand materials on firefighting and first-aid methods and equipment; Learn locations of hydrants; Think and act quickly in emergencies; Understand and carry out oral and written directions; Drive ambulance with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and city policy; Speak on radio and follow emergency instructions; Analyze circumstances to determine scope of emergency situation; Keep records and prepare reports; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Education/Experience/Training: Any combination of education, experience, and training which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is graduation from twelfth grade and completion of courses in firefighting and/or emergency medical treatment.

License/Certification: Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles; ability to obtain a Class B California commercial driver’s license and an ambulance driver’s license, EMT B certification and CCEMSA accreditation within 12 months of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: Frequently required to sit, talk, hear stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell; frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or carry up to 250 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities include close vision,

distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have stamina to perform strenuous labor for long periods of time and work under stressful and emergency situations. Work is performed primarily in Fire Station, vehicle and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts.

Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level is usually loud. Employee must comply with the Fire Department’s non-tobacco use policy. This position is required to sleep overnight at the Fire Station one night each month to work along with the full-time staff and attend monthly training on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month.
